Clinical Health Psychology Service

We help you and your family manage the emotions and feelings (psychological consequences) that may be caused by your health conditions, such as living with a long term chronic illness.

Health conditions and illnesses can affect more than just your body. There may be emotional and psychological effects, such as feelings of fear and uncertainty, and an impact on your personal life at home. These effects may come and go, or they can seem to be there most of the time.

You might find that sometimes you can cope with the situation by yourself, and with help from friends and family.

However if you’re experiencing high levels of distress you may find it helpful to seek support from our specialist Clinical Health Psychology service. Our psychologists can support your and your family in many different ways, such as:

  • Helping you make sense of your condition and adjust to everyday life, including symptoms, medical treatment and side effects
  • Guiding you on new approaches to coping and reaching your goals for improved quality of life
  • Helping you understand the impact of your condition on yourself and those around you, including your relationships
  • Assisting you on how you can communicate with the people around you
  • Talking with you about any uncertainty you might have about future treatments and living with an illness

We also work together with other teams and healthcare professionals to create the right treatment plan for your needs.

Our specialists can help you with things like persistent pain, preparing for surgery, managing your diabetes, and providing support if you’re receiving palliative care.

If you think you or someone you care about could benefit from our service please talk to your GP or healthcare professional, as they may suggest a referral. We also work together with different charities who may suggest contacting us.

Unfortunately, we don’t accept self referrals.

Access to our service will depend on your needs and the teams and hospitals we work with. Your GP or healthcare professional may wish to check with us before making your referral.

We work with many different teams across Berkshire, and your treatment and appointments will depend on your needs and the services you currently receive.

If you do need to contact our CHPS team, you can find us at Erleigh Road in Reading
