Arriving for your appointment
- Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment and check in at reception.

- You can bring a carer if you need extra help.
- If you're anxious or worried about fainting, please let us know - we can help you feel more comfortable.
- Drink lots of water and stay warm before your appointment to make it easier to find a vein.
Fasting blood tests
If you've been asked to do a fasting blood test, please don't eat or drink (you can still drink water) for at least 12 hours before your appointment. If you do eat or drink during this time, we may need to ask you to rebook.
Booking your appointment
If your GP or another healthcare professional has referred you for a blood test, you can use our online booking system to make an appointment for West Berkshire Community Hospital.
We're unable to take walk-ins at our clinic. If you need to book an urgent appointment, please call 0118 904 7900 as soon as possible and choose 'option 3'.
Urgent blood test times
In West Berkshire, urgent blood tests can be scheduled for Tuesday to Friday mornings when needed.
Needle use
We need to use a needle to draw blood to make sure we get the most accurate results from your test. If you're anxious about having your blood taken, please let us know and we'll help you feel comfortable. You're welcome to listen to music with headphones or use your phone for distraction during the procedure.
Repeat tests
In some cases, you may need another test. If a sample is compromised or results are inconclusive, your doctor may request a repeat test.

Berkshire Healthcare’s Health Bus offers free checks in partnership with Royal Berkshire Hospital
Health Bus offers free checks in partnership with Royal Berkshire Hospital Our services Our community Earlier this month, Berkshire Healthcare’s Health Bus visited Morrisons in Reading, offering free health checks and wellbeing conversations to members of the public. In partnership with Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, the initiative aimed to improve access to advice, identify potential health concerns early, and support people to take positive steps for their health. A wide range of services were available, including the Respiratory Service, Heart Function Service, Dietetics, Talking Therapies, the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Team, and The Royal Berkshire Hospital’s Meet PEET (Patient Experience and Engagement Team). Staff provided assessments such as blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and lung function, alongside lifestyle advice, signposting, and information about local services. The events offered an opportunity for people who may not routinely access healthcare to engage informally with clinicians, ask questions, and receive personalised guidance in a supportive, community setting. Over the two days, the teams spoke to numerous members of the public, conducting 19 lung function tests, 22 blood pressure checks, nine heart rate checks, an ECG, and offering smoking cessation advice, among other health checks. Seven participants were found to have high blood pressure, and ten were signposted to their GP or local services, demonstrating how effective bringing health checks directly into the community can be in identifying potential issues early and connecting people with the care and support they need. By taking healthcare out of traditional health care settings and into the community, the Health Bus is helping to improve access to local support and ensure vital services reach those who need them most.
