Contraception

Contraception is a way to stop pregnancy before having sex. There are different types of contraception, such as condoms, birth control pills, patches, and injections.

Each type works in its own way to help prevent pregnancy.

Contraception Choices website provides clear information to help you compare different methods and decide what’s right for you.

Ready to find the contraception that’s right for you? Book an appointment with our team and let’s talk through your options.

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex, whether no contraception was used or something went wrong.

It’s most effective when taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours.

Some options remain available up to 5 days after sex, and occasionally longer depending on your menstrual cycle.

You can explore your options and find local services via NHS Choices.

Sexually transmitted infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be passed from person to person through unprotected sex, including oral sex in some cases.

Free and confidential home testing kits are available in certain areas, and you can also book a clinic appointment for testing and treatment.

To learn more about different types of STIs, symptoms, and prevention, visit NHS Choices.

HIV

HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system over time. It’s passed through unprotected sex, blood, and other bodily fluids.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication that helps prevent HIV before exposure ideal for those at ongoing risk. Arrange an appointment to discuss PrEP for long-term protection.

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency treatment taken after potential exposure. It must be started within 72 hours to be effective. Use NHS Choices to find treatment near you.

New vaccines for sexual health

Gonorrhoea (MenB) Vaccination

Gonorrhoea is a common STI in the UK, with highest risk among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. The MenB vaccine offers protection against gonorrhoea, meningitis, and septicaemia caused by meningococcal B bacteria.

MPOX (MVA) Vaccination

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men—especially those with multiple partners or who attend sex-on-premises venues are at higher risk of MPOX (formerly Monkeypox). The MVA vaccine helps prevent and lessen the severity of MPOX and smallpox, which can cause painful skin lesions.
