Blood testing (Phlebotomy)
We offer a blood testing (also known as Phlebotomy) service. We support other services both at our hospital, and other hospitals across Berkshire.
Changes to our service due to Coronavirus (COVID-19)
We’re making arrangements to return to normal service as quickly and safely as possible.
This means we're making some changes to our appointments and urgent tests.
You can find more details on the page below.
We thank you for your continued patience during this time.
Until further notice, we’re only seeing patients whose blood tests are urgent.
Contact our department to book an urgent blood test appointment
Call 01635 273343, and press option 3.
When you call, we’ll ask whether you have displayed the symptoms of coronavirus
We’ll check that your request is listed as urgent in our system before confirming your appointment.
Due to the high volume of calls, you may need to leave a message which we will aim to return within 24 hours.
Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment.
You must wear a face covering and follow the latest social distance guidance while you’re here.
You must also wash your hands and use the hand gel provided.
All routine appointments have been postponed until further notice.
Please contact the clinician or GP who requested your blood test to make new arrangements.
Routine appointments cannot be booked online or via the automated blood test appointment booking line right now.
When you arrive for your appointment, please check-in using either the iPad on the reception wall or talk to someone at the welcome desk. At your appointment, we’ll take blood samples, and then send these off to the relevant department for testing.
Routine blood test results can take anywhere between five to seven days, but can take longer depending on the type of test you need.
We don’t keep test results, so please contact the department or GP that referred you to find out your results.
Advice for all patients
We encourage everyone to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and relaxed. Being dehydrated can make it difficult to find veins. Keeping warm will help also help our specialists do blood tests especially if your veins are fine or small.
We know having blood tests can make some people nervous. If you have a phobia of blood or needles, or you’re generally feeling quite uneasy, there are some things you can do to help yourself feel calm such as:
- Bringing someone with you to your appointment for moral support
- Listening to music or watching a video on your phone
- Looking at pictures on the wall in the room
If you’re aged 16 or under, you must be accompanied by an adult at your appointment.
If you do feel that you’re likely to faint, please tell a member of our team before the blood test begins. They can talk you through the procedure and can help lay you down to make sure you feel comfortable.
Urgent Blood Tests
If you’re referred for an urgent blood test it will be indicated on your referral form. Please bring this form with you to our centre at any time between 8.00am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and we’ll book you into one of our emergency slots.
Whilst we can guarantee you will be seen the same day, the wait may be up to an hour during busy times.
Fasting Blood Tests
If you’re referred for a fasting blood test for testing things like diabetes for example, you must not eat or drink (known as fasting) for at least 12 hours before the test. You can still drink water to keep hydrated.
You can arrange your appointment once you’ve been referred to us by your GP, consultant or other healthcare professionals.
Unfortunately, we don’t accept self referrals. If you’re aged 16 or under, you must be accompanied by an adult.
You can contact us either by calling our automated 24 hour booking line, or by registering online with the West Berkshire Community Hospital booking system.
