The top five NHS organisations for staff engagement includes Berkshire Healthcare, according to the latest NHS Staff Survey.

Published 27 March 2024

We’re delighted to announce our best ever results after receiving the top score (7.45) for staff engagement compared to similar NHS Trusts for the fifth year running, which is also the fifth top score among all NHS organisations.

A record 67% (3,291) of our colleagues responded to the survey, which also showed significant improvements in 28 areas of staff experience.

Alex Gild, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said:
“In another year of unprecedented pressures on our services, it’s encouraging that more of our colleagues feel fulfilled, listened to and proud to work at Berkshire Healthcare.

“This is great news for our community, as we know that highly engaged staff means better quality healthcare and better outcomes for our patients, their families and carers.”

We’re also proud to be the top scoring community and mental health Trust for staff recommending their organisation as a place to work, with 75.4% staff either agreeing or strongly agreeing with this statement, compared to the national average of 61.1%.

Our top scores compared to other similar Trusts included:

  • 88% staff said care of patients/service users is the organisation’s top priority (an increase of 9%)
  • 77.6% would be happy to recommend Berkshire Healthcare to friends and family for treatment (a 1% increase)
  • 85.5% said the organisation acts on concerns raised by patients/service users' (a 10% increase)
  • 67.4% said the organisation is committed to helping me balance my work and home life (an increase of 8%)

While the results show that projects and priorities, such as our anti-racism strategy, violence reduction and prevention, and new manager training programmes are having an impact, there’s still more to do to reduce the inequalities and negative experiences faced by many of our ethnically diverse, LGBTQ+ and disabled staff.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be working with our teams and divisions so that staff are actively involvement in making improvements at every level, as we continue to progress towards our vision of being a great place to get care, a great place to give care.
