Important health message – Meningitis cases in Reading (15 May 2026)
You may be aware that there have been three reported cases of meningitis in Reading. Public health teams are working closely with local services to manage the situation and reduce any risk of further spread.
If you are feeling unwell or concerned, please contact NHS 111 for advice.
Symptoms of meningitis can include:
- High temperature
- Being sick
- Headache
- A rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it
- Drowsiness or being difficult to wake or unresponsive
- It’s important to remember that meningitis can become serious quickly, so please seek medical advice if you are worried.
The best way to protect your child is through free NHS vaccinations. Vaccination offers protection against some types of meningitis, and it’s never too late to catch up on any vaccines your child may have missed.
To check your child’s vaccination history, you can:
- Check your child’s Red Book
- Contact their GP surgery
- Look for previous school immunisation emails sent via Cinnamon Digital
- Please note that the risk to others in the local area is very low, and there is no reason for pupils to be kept at home.
