How to find your NHS number
What is an NHS number?
Your NHS number is a unique 10-digit number that is used to identify your health records.
Everyone registered with the NHS in England has their own NHS number.
We use it to make sure we have the right information for you and to match you to your records.
Why you need your NHS number
You may be asked for your NHS number when you refer into our services.
Having your NHS number helps us to:
- find your health record quickly
- make sure your information is correct
- process your referral without delays
You do not need your NHS number to get care, but having it ready makes things quicker and easier.
The quickest way to find your NHS number
The easiest way to find your NHS number is to use the official NHS service.
You will need:
- your full name
- your date of birth
- the postcode you are registered with your GP
Your NHS number will be sent to you by text, email or letter.
Other ways to find your NHS number
- contact your GP surgery
- ask an NHS service you have used before
- check letters from your GP or hospital
- check prescriptions or appointment letters
- check the NHS App (your NHS number is shown in your profile)
If you still cannot find it
That’s okay. If you have tried all the steps above and still cannot find your NHS number, you may still be able to make a referral. Please email the service for support and advice. They will guide you through the next steps.
If you think you do not have an NHS number
Most people who live in England have an NHS number.
You may not have one if you:
- are new to the country
- are not registered with a GP
If this is the case, you can:
- register with a GP surgery
- ask an NHS service for help
You will usually be given an NHS number when you first register or receive care.
