Make this year different. Quit smoking and beat the cravings

Make this year different

Quitting smoking isn’t easy, we know that. Cravings and withdrawal symptoms can feel overwhelming, and many people worry about failing.

But every quit attempt brings you closer to success, and with the right support and resources, this time can be the one that lasts.

Health benefits

From the moment you stop smoking, your body begins to heal:

  • 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate starts to return to normal.
  • 8 hours: Oxygen levels rise and harmful carbon monoxide drops.
  • 48 hours: Your sense of taste and smell begin to improve.
  • Weeks and months ahead: Breathing becomes easier, energy levels increase, and your risk of serious illness falls.

Managing cravings and withdrawals

Cravings are temporary, they peak and then fade. Here are some proven ways to stay smokefree:

  • Use stop smoking aids: Nicotine replacement therapies (patches, gum, sprays) or vaping can help manage cravings.
  • Combine products: A patch and a mouth spray or vape can boost your chances of success.
  • Distract yourself: Go for a walk, chew sugar-free gum, or try a breathing exercise.
  • Remember your reasons: Write down why you’re quitting (e.g. for your health, family, or finances) and keep them close (phone notes app).
  • Get support: Friends, family, and local stop smoking services can make all the difference. You can join the NHS Smokefree Facebook group

Celebrate your milestones

Every smokefree day is a win. Whether it’s one week, one month, or one year, take pride in your progress.

Many people find it motivating to track their savings, too. Imagine what you could do with the money you’re no longer spending on cigarettes.

Beat the cravings, count the savings.
