We are proud to announce that Berkshire Healthcare has officially achieved Advanced Foundation Trust (AFT) status, becoming one of the first trusts in the country to receive this new national mark of excellence from NHS England.

Advanced Foundation Trust status recognises high-performing NHS organisations that consistently deliver excellent care, strong leadership and financial sustainability, while improving outcomes for the communities they serve.

We were selected as part of the first national cohort to undergo the independent assessment process, reflecting our Outstanding Care Quality Commission rating, strong operational performance and track record of innovation and partnership working.

What this means for patients and communities

Achieving Advanced Foundation Trust status gives us greater flexibility to make decisions locally and respond more quickly to the needs of our patients, staff and communities.

This will help us continue improving services across Berkshire and beyond, including:

  • Faster and more joined-up care
  • Greater use of digital services and technology
  • More personalised and preventative healthcare
  • Stronger partnership working across organisations
  • Increased focus on reducing health inequalities
  • Continued investment in community and mental health services

As a community and mental health provider, we are already leading work to develop neighbourhood-based services that bring together NHS organisations, local authorities, voluntary organisations and community groups to provide more joined-up support closer to people’s homes.

Recognition for our staff and partners

“Achieving Advanced Foundation Trust status is a hugely significant milestone for Berkshire Healthcare and a proud moment for everyone connected to the Trust. This recognition reflects the dedication, compassion and professionalism of our staff, the strength of our partnerships, and the trust our patients and communities place in us every day. Most importantly, this status gives us greater freedom to improve services, invest in innovation, and work even more closely with our partners and communities to improve health outcomes and tackle inequalities. ”
Julian Emms, Chief Executive

Supporting the future of healthcare

Advanced Foundation Trust status is designed to support organisations helping shape the future direction of the NHS, particularly the shift towards more care delivered in communities, greater use of digital technology, and a stronger focus on prevention and population health.

This achievement reflects years of sustained improvement and collaboration across our organisation and with partners throughout Berkshire, and we are excited about the opportunities it creates for our patients, communities and staff.
