Condition : Long COVID
What is long COVID?
Long COVID, also known as post COVID-19 syndrome, is a condition where you experience symptoms more than 12 weeks after catching COVID-19.
The most common symptoms of long COVID are:
- fatigue (extreme tiredness)
- shortness of breath
- brain fog (memory and concentration problems)
- heart palpitations (when your heartbeat becomes more noticeable)
- dizziness
- joint pain and muscle aches
Other symptoms include:
- loss of, or changes to, sense of smell or taste
- cough
- headaches
- chest pain or tightness
- insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
- pins and needles
- depression and anxiety
- tinnitus and/or earaches
- nausea (feeling sick), diarrhoea, stomach aches, loss of appetite
- rashes
What causes long COVID?
Long COVID is not yet well understood. Organisations such as the National Institute for Health Care Research (NIHR) are carrying out research to improve our understanding and find treatments.
Long COVID does not seem to be linked to how ill you were when you first got COVID-19. Even people who have mild symptoms at first can end up having long-term problems, while those who are very ill may make a full recovery relatively quickly.
