Learn moreIntroduction
Our 'Supporting behaviours that challenge' workshop is designed for parents of children with a learning disability.
It will help you to understand your child’s behaviours through a positive behaviour support (PBS) approach.
PBS is a person-centred framework that focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviour and identifying ways to support positive outcomes. Within our team, we use PBS with young people who have a learning disability and present with behaviours that challenge which may be influenced by environmental factors, emotional distress, or mental health.
About the workshop
One of the most valued aspects of the workshop is the opportunity to connect with other families. We aim to create a supportive and non-judgemental space where parents and carers can share experiences, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
Throughout the workshop, you will work alongside us to develop a personalised PBS plan with tailored behaviour strategies that can be used across different settings to support your young person. In the next video, you'll see snapshots of what a workshop is like.
The video above provides a snapshot of a real workshop session, giving you an insight into what it is like to take part in our Supporting Behaviours that Challenge Workshop. Each workshop consists of eight weekly face-to-face sessions, each lasting two hours, followed by a review session approximately 4–6 weeks later.
Topics covered during the workshop include:
- understanding learning disability, autism, and development
- understanding the function of behaviour and what maintains behaviour
- supporting your child’s mental health including anxiety and low mood
- supporting your child’s physical health
- understanding different communication and sensory needs
- understanding cycles of behaviours that challenge and how to actively intervene safely
- learning how to teach, shape and promote positive behaviours as a replacement for behaviours that challenge
- how to promote your own wellbeing as a parent and carer
While we encourage both parents/carers to attend where possible, we ask that at least one parent/carer attends consistently throughout the programme. Please note that this workshop is designed for parents and carers only.
There is no need to bring anything with you - just yourselves. We will provide a workbook and all workshop materials, including pens and paper and tea, coffee, and light refreshments.
In the next videos, you'll hear directly from parents who have taken part in the workshop, sharing their experiences and what the programme has meant for them.
