Applying for a job
You can see and apply for any of our vacancies by visiting the NHS Jobs website.
There you’ll be asked to fill out an application form (good news – NHS Jobs will save a lot of your information so you don’t have to waste time repeating it).
There are three key areas on this form that we focus on:
- Your full employment and training history, explaining any gaps you might have
- Complete reference information for the last three years
- Your personal statement to demonstrate how you meet all the essential criteria outlined in the personal specification
Attending an interview
Once you’ve submitted your form we’ll be in touch and, if your application was successful, we’ll invite you to come in for an interview. Take some time to think about the sorts of questions you might be asked before you come in.
We’ll also ask you to bring along some documents to prove the following:
- Your identity
- Your eligibility to work in the UK
- Your professional registration and qualifications
If your interview is successful and all the documents have been provided, we’ll make you a conditional offer while our recruitment team carry out some employment checks.
Once all the checks are successfully complete, we’ll make you a final offer for the position.

Our questions and exercises are designed to help you demonstrate how your behaviour matches our values, so think carefully about this before your interview.
Your values-based interview
We’ll ask you to share examples of situations where you’ve demonstrated a particular skill or how you’ve handled a specific issue. This helps us to assess your strengths and any areas we can help you develop in before we make a decision.
You can prepare by taking some time to understand our values and how you can demonstrate these during your interview. You can find an outline of the behaviours we’re looking for on all of our job descriptions.

We’ll ask you to take part in a group discussion with other applicants to assess how you work as part of a team, reach decisions and achieve the objectives outlined in a brief.
We’ll ask you to role play in a one-to-one meeting with an actor who will represent someone you would need to work with. We’ll give you some background information to the scenario and time to prepare on the day. We’re not expecting you to act but to deal with the situation as you would in real life.
We’ll ask you to complete one or more multiple choice tests to assess your skills that are relevant to the job your applying for. We’ll give you more information about these in your interview confirmation letter.
We’ll ask you to deal with a number of items in an in-tray within a certain amount of time. This exercise simulates some of the planning and administrative aspects of the role.
We’ll give you some information to review and prepare a short presentation on. This exercise will let us assess your effectiveness at understanding information and presenting data and ideas. It will also let us see how you present and interact with a small audience.
