Health Visiting

Our health visitors, who are all qualified nurses or midwives, are here to support and guide you and your family as your child grows up.

We provide you with practical support and health advice within your community with a focus on families and young children up to the age of five-years-old.

We are here to answer your questions and give advice on all sorts of topics including breast-feeding, sleep, immunisation and teething.

We work in various locations including your family home, children’s centres and GP surgeries.

We are usually notified of all pregnancies and births from the midwife service and informed of all new families with under-fives registering with a GP in Berkshire.

However, parents and carers can also refer themselves to us.

If you are pregnant, we will contact you to introduce our service at about 28-weeks.

When you have had your baby, we will aim to visit you at home when your child is 14-days-old.

When we are informed that you have moved into the area, we will contact you within 10 working days to introduce our service.

During the first five years of your child’s life we:
• offer appointments to review your child’s health and progress
• offer advice and support

We also work with other agencies if you or a member of your family has special needs or a disability to offer you support, advice and information where special help may be required.

The Health Visiting service will contact you to arrange an appointment before your baby is born; when your baby is 2 weeks old and again when your baby is 6 – 8 weeks old.  When your baby is 9 – 12 months old and 2 years old you will be invited to review their health and development.  You can see a member of the Health Visiting team at your local Child Health Clinic or contact us for any concerns or advice by telephoning our Duty Health Visitor advice line.
