Dental services for children

Our service is here for your child if they need a lot of treatment and might be uncooperative, nervous or might need sedation from general anaesthetic.

We can also help if you child has been referred for a particular dental problem.

Sometimes, children who need to have a lot of teeth out or have severe dental infection might need to have their treatment under general anaesthetic in hospital.

We will firstly assess your child at one of our clinics to see if this is the most suitable way to take their teeth out.

However, we are unable to take children’s teeth out under general anaesthetic for orthodontic treatment.

We do not normally treat children who can be treated by a general dentist.

If we feel that your child should be treated by a general dentist, we’ll help you find one.

We will treat your child if they:

• Are pre-cooperative or uncooperative and unable to accept treatment with a general dentist
• have extensive cavities or tooth decay
• are likely to require teeth removal under general anaesthetic.

Our service works on a referral basis.

Referrals can be made through your own dentist, doctor on any healthcare or social care professional.

You can request a referral form by contacting cds.hq@berkshire.nhs.uk

Your child will usually be offered the first available appointment at your nearest clinic.

However, if you request a particular dentist there may be a longer wait for an appointment.

Our teams work from clinics in Berkshire including Slough, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Reading and Newbury.

Most clinics are open 9am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5pm but please note that not all clinics are open every day.

There is disabled access at all clinics.
