Hope College Slough

Hope College is our dedicated centre for mental health education to give you, your family and friends the skills to help you as you embark on your journey to better mental health.

We offer four learning pathways at Hope College covering Life Skills, Recovery, Peer Support, Working Towards Recovery.

Each of these pathways can help you better understand your condition, and support you in keeping your independence.

There’s no assessment involved when joining, so you can choose to enrol in any or all of these pathways. Our courses typically last between three and six weeks, while our workshops run from one to two days.

Most of our courses are free to attend, but some have an associated cost which is funded through a personal budget. This personal budget is funded by the local council. If there is a cost, our team can talk to you about this.

If you’re interested in joining, you can contact and meet our team to find out more. We also run a number of open days and taster sessions throughout the term, were you can talk to our current volunteer peer mentors.

Our team can help you decide which courses might be the best option for you, talk you through the enrolment process, and help you create your own individual learning plan.

Life skills

If you feel that your condition has affected your self-esteem, we can help you meet with others and take part in group activities to build your confidence. We provide a weekly timetable to help structure your week, provide social support and teach life skills.

You can attend different activities like sports sessions, support groups and events in your local community to help you meet others and learn new things and hobbies.

Recovery

Recovery is about learning ways to manage both your physical and mental health. The courses and workshops can help you explore and develop your resourcefulness and boost your wellbeing.

We suggest these course if you’re ready to start taking the next steps towards discharge from the Community Mental health Team (CMHT).

Volunteer Peer Mentor (VPM) Support

If you have insights from your own experiences of your mental health condition that you think can help others, we can train you to become a volunteer peer mentor (VPM). Our ten week course will help develop your communication skills, and awareness of understanding personal boundaries and confidentiality.

When you’ve graduated, you’ll be involved in helping our team develop and facilitate courses at the college, and potentially help others through one to one mentoring support. 

Working Towards Recovery

Having a job can play a big part in building your independence and recovery from mental health challenges. Experience has shown than many people are able to work and pursue careers if they are properly supported.

Our employment service includes workshops and one to one sessions with specialists to help you find meaningful, paid employment.

We also offer different courses and workshops for your loved ones and carers.

Carer Training

This can build your carer’s understanding of different mental health conditions, and how they can support you in your recovery. It covers a range of topics, such as medication, communication, stress and relapse prevention.

Care Café

Our Carer Café is a relaxed and informal monthly session for your friends and family to come and meet others. They’ll have opportunities to talk to trained mental health professionals, and access learning and training resources.

Hope College is open to you and your carers if you’re being supported by our Slough Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). To register for courses, please complete an enrolment form from the reception desk at New Horizons and send it to us by post or email.

Our team is based at New Horizons in Slough, but our courses and workshops are provided right across Slough. Please contact us to arrange a visit to us. We're available for contact 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Friends in need

If you’re coping with some mild forms of depression or anxiety, you can find support from Friends in Need. They’re a peer support group, by the Mental Health Charity, Mind.
