John Hedger

John Hedger - Chair Person
John Hedger has had a long and distinguished career in the Department of Education stretching back from 1966 to 2000. His career demonstrates a specialist interest in children with learning or social issues. In addition, Mr Hedger became the Director of Operations in the Department of Education in 1995 and was a Board Member from 1992 – 2000. From 2000, he was a Trustee of Rathbone, a third sector organisation which supports young people at risk of exclusion and also those with learning difficulties. He became the acting Chair of this organisation in 2006 until the present date. He has also been a Trustee of the National Foundation for Educational Research since 2004 and is currently Vice Chair of the Mary Hare School for the Deaf.

Keith Arundale - Non-Executive Director
Keith Arundale is a chartered accountant and a chartered marketer. He was with PricewaterhouseCoopers for 28 years in London, Windsor and Pittsburgh, USA. He is now a university lecturer and consultant in private equity and venture capital and author of the British Venture Capital Association's 'Guide to Private Equity' and ‘Raising Venture Capital Finance in Europe’ published by Kogan Page.

Keith is a Visiting Fellow at the ICMA Centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading where he has developed and teaches the MSc course on Venture Capital. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Business and Law, Kingston University London where he teaches the MSc course on Auditing and Control. Keith was President of the English Tech Tour in 2007 and is Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Marketers (City livery company), a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants and of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers and is a Freeman of the City of London.

Keith was brought up in North Wales, studied Physics and Applied Optics at Imperial College, London and lived in Ealing before moving to Windsor eleven years ago. He is married to Kathy who is a critical care nurse from Pittsburgh, USA. In their free time Keith and Kathy run marriage preparation courses in the Windsor and Reading areas.

Andy Felton - Non-Executive Director
Andy is employed by The John Lewis Partnership as Head of Facilities. He has been involved in a variety of local groups and is currently also a board member of the Victoria Partnership. He has been a governor of the Polehampton infant school since 2001 and is a member of The Berkshire Transport Partnership.

Andy lives with his family in Twyford and has no declared political activity.

Mark Lejman - Non-Executive Director
Before taking up his current role as a NED of the Berkshire Healthcare Trust, Mark served as a NED of the Berkshire East PCT and as part of these responsibilities he chaired the Provider services sector of the PCT.

Mark Lejman joined Cosalt plc, a leading provider of marine safety products and services, as Chief Executive in May 2008.

He spent the first 20 years of his career at Courtaulds plc in a number of management positions of increasing seniority, latterly as CEO of its Tencel premium fibres division. In 1998, he was part of the team that led the management buy-out of Tencel from Akzo Nobel, which had acquired Courtaulds that year. At Acordis Group, Mark was CEO of the group's cellulosic fibres division and played a key role in both the successful growth and eventual sale of the Group in 2004. He then joined The Morgan Crucible Co plc as a director and CEO of its carbon division.

Mark also served as a non-executive director of Delta plc, the engineered steel business between 2006 to 2010.

Rodney Phillips - Non-Executive Director
Professor Rodney Phillips qualified in Medicine in 1976 in Melbourne Australia and trained as a physician in Oxford, London and South East Asia.

He is Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford where he has over 30 years experience working for the NHS and the University; he holds several senior professorial research Directorships at the University as well as being the Chairman of the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research. He is currently Head of Finance and Estates for the Medical Sciences at Oxford. He is an honorary consultant physician in the Oxford University Hospitals Trust and serves on several of their strategic boards. He is a Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford and sits on its Governing Body and on its strategic committee.

His research is in the field of HIV/AIDS. He has taken a number of laboratory discoveries into the clinic so changing guidelines and practices.

He was born in Melbourne Australia and has lived in the United Kingdom since 1981. He lives in Oxfordshire.

Peter Warne - Non-Executive Director
Peter worked for the US multinational company, 3M, for over 37 years, holding a wide variety of sales and marketing and functional roles. As a director of 3M UK Plc for over 10 years he led several different business units, finishing his career leading the logistics and customer service operations. He was born and grew up in West Sussex but has lived most of his adult life near Newbury.

Peter is married with 2 sons and, until her untimely death at the age of 17, he and his wife were carers for their daughter, who had profound learning and physical disabilities. Now retired, his leisure interests are visiting France, improving his erratic golf and ballroom dancing.

Angela Williams - Non-Executive Director

Angela Williams is Human Resources Director (UK and Ireland) for Sodexo PLC responsible for providing strategic HR leadership to 40,000 employees, as well as part of the global HR Leadership team. Sodexo is the worldwide leader in quality of life services in 80 countries with 420,000 employees.

Prior to this role Angela spent 3 years as People and Governance Director for British Gas, part of the Centrica Group (a FTSE 30 PLC). As part of the British Gas Executive Committee, Angela lead the People team offering an HR, HSE and Governance service across all areas of the Company, with over 35,000 employees with a balance of unionised and non unionised teams across the UK, India and South Africa.

Prior to this Angela spent 5 years as Group Human Resources Director for the Land Securities Group plc, the UK’s leading property investment, property management and development company (a FTSE 50 Company). Previously Angela has held roles as European HR Director for Electronic Arts Ltd; VP of HR and Organisational Development for the successful pan-European start up and IPO dot.com QXL Ricardo plc, European HR and Training Manager for the Walt Disney Company Ltd; Training and Development Manager for B.H. Blackwell Ltd in Oxford and New York, and HR Executive with Esso Petroluem Co. Ltd (Now ExxonMobil).

Angela has held Non Executive Director roles with Central and Cecil Housing Trust (a not-for-profit provider of housing, care and support to vulnerable people) and First Care Ltd (a provider of first day absence and wellbeing solutions). Julian Emms - Chief Executive Officer
Julian was appointed Chief Executive of BHFT in July 2012, following a nine-month period during which he was the acting CEO.

As an NHS executive director since 2004 Julian has wide ranging board level experience including four years as director of operations and four years as deputy chief executive. His various portfolios have encompassed operational management, strategy and business development, service redesign, organisational development, facilities and PFI. Julian was part of the Trust's successful foundation trust application in 2007 and was the project director who oversaw the integration of community health services into the Trust in 2011.

Julian's senior management roles prior to becoming a director were all joint posts with social care and focussed on providing better integrated care for local people.

Prior to joining the NHS in 1997, Julian's early career was spent in the probation service where he held a variety of roles over a 10-year period.

Alex Gild, Director of Finance, Performance and Information
Alex Gild is the Director of Finance, Performance and Information. Alex was until September 2009 the Deputy Director of Finance having joined the Trust in September 2006, from South Central Strategic Health Authority.

A business graduate and Chartered Management Accountant, Alex has extensive experience gained across a number of NHS organisations including the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. Alex is married with 2 children and lives in West Oxfordshire.

David Townsend, Chief Operating Officer
David has been in Director roles for 15 years at four organisations, with accountability for Business Performance, Service Delivery and Organisational Improvements.

An MBA qualified Executive, David's private sector experience has been with service sector organisations where he has held positions with BP, MacDonalds, Initial (Rentokil) and Geest Plc.

With 8 years' NHS experience, he was appointed as Director of Operations for Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in March 2010 and prior to this was Managing Director of PRO-CURE.

Helen Mackenzie

Helen Mackenzie, Director of Nursing & Governance
Helen Mackenzie has a long association with nursing in Berkshire. She was director of clinical development and deputy chief executive at Wokingham PCT, moving on to become deputy chief executive and interim chief executive of NHS Berkshire West before she joined BHFT in April 2012.

Justin Wilson

Dr Justin Wilson – Medical Director
Dr Justin Wilson qualified in Medicine in 1995, completing training in Psychiatry in Oxford and London before becoming a Consultant.

He has previously worked for the NHS, voluntary and independent organisations, with people with learning disabilities and working aged adults in community and hospital settings, including forensic units. He also has experience in palliative medicine and an interest in liaison psychiatry and cancer services.

Prior to joining the Trust he was the Head of Psychiatry for an independent organisation providing secure hospital care.

He enjoys sport, particularly tennis and, recently, fencing. He is married with two teenage sons.

Bev Searle

Bev Searle, Director of Corporate Affairs
Bev Searle was Director of joint Commissioning at NHS Berkshire and moved on to a six-month secondment at the Trust as Director of Corporate Affairs on 1 October 2012. Her portfolio includes board level responsibility for HR, communications, strategy and business development, all major projects, membership and equality and diversity.
